Recordings of all the Beethoven symphonies with their chief conductor are always a milestone in the artistic work of the Berliner Philharmoniker. So it was with Herbert von Karajan and Claudio Abbado, and expectations are correspondingly high for this cycle conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. Where does the special status of these symphonies come from? Simon Rattle has an explanation: One of the things Beethoven does is to give you a mirror into yourself – where you are now as a musician. In fact, this music contains such a wealth of extreme emotions and brilliant compositional ideas that reveal.

Herbert von Karajan conducts the Berliner Philharmoniker on this highly-acclaimed marathon recording of all nine Beethoven symphonies, originally released in 1963. Von Karajan recorded the entire cycle of Beethoven's symphonies four times during his career; this recording ranks as the finest by many critics and fans. Never before had all nine Beethoven's symphonies been recorded and released as an integrally planned subscription set. The financial risk was substantial, and it was estimated that record label Deutsche Grammophon would have to sell 100,000 boxes just to break even.

by Herbert von Karajan and Berliner Philharmoniker. Beethoven: Overture "Fidelio", O. 2b by Herbert von Karajan and Berliner Philharmoniker. Herbert von Karajan (1908-1989) recorded the Beethoven nine symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic 3 different times: 1961/2 (DG); 1975-77 (DG); and 1982-84 (DG). This Galleria CD issue is from the 1975-7 cycle. It is very good, if not the very best of Karajan's Beethoven Symphonies. Karajan even played III this way in his 1955 Philharmonia Beethoven 8, and he was just 47 at that time. Fidelio" Overture is also excellent, as are all Karajan's overtures (DG Galleria, 2 CD set).
