The Get Up Kids seem to be getting really active again, first with last year’s Kicker EP, then with January’s Pryor/Suptic side project, Radar State, and now finally with a full-length Get Up Kids LP in Problems. I’m hoping this recent uptick in activity from the band signals a desire to get back to making music again, and the band won’t make us wait as long for another album. Problems marks the band’s first album in eight years, and their first really good album in 15 years, so I hope we’re getting signs that The Get Up Kids are truly back this time

The Get Up Kids were looking for a job and then they found some jobs. After the beloved Kansas punk band went on hiatus in 2011, main songwriter Matt Pryor became a farmhand - I picked radishes and tomatoes and shit and it was awesome. Guitarist/vocalist Jim Suptic went back to school and landed with the United States Geological Survey, before taking his current gig at Steps For Faith, a non-profit for low-income amputees started by Billy Brimblecom, his former bandmate in Blackpool Lights. Two years later, the Get Up Kids are back with Problems, their first album since their self-released 2011 LP There Are Rules and pretty much the only good thing to come out of the otherwise woeful festival.

I think this is another weak release by The Get Up Kids. With the exception of two tracks, Salina and Your Ghost is Gone, this album has lost the critical element that makes The Get Up Kids great. In my opinion, this release and every release since Guilt Show is easily forgettable. Guilt Show, Something to Write Home About, Red Letter Day & Woodson are still the go-to albums for me. Bump.
