With just a small group for company, you learn about the church’s history, as well as the famous names who once frequented it (and who still rest in its catacombs), including the first resident bishop of New York City. The two did the reconstruction as a lecture demonstration for the architecture department, and two professors in the audience told McCall that the last surviving member of the Bauhaus company was living in New York. They introduced her to Andreas Weininger, who helped McCall understand the background of the dances. I found them intriguing, but I thought they were more theoretical than performance oriented, so I put them aside, Wiley said. But this year she wanted to do a concert centered around the late choreographer Alwin Nikolais, whose 100th birthday is this year, and that brought the Schlemmer dances back into her mind.

New York City Ballet (NYCB) is a ballet company founded in 1948 by choreographer George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein. Balanchine and Jerome Robbins are considered the founding choreographers of the company. Léon Barzin was the company's first music director. City Ballet grew out of earlier troupes: the Producing Company of the School of American Ballet, 1934; the American Ballet, 1935, and Ballet Caravan, 1936, which merged into American Ballet Caravan, 1941; and directly from the Ballet Society, 1946.

The new company is a de velopment from the First Chamber Dance Quartet, which leads it, somewhat in accurately, to claim that it has been in existence since 1961. In fact, the old First Chamber Dance Quartet broke up last year and two of its five members. Charles Bennett and Janice Groman, have been joined by Marjorie Mussman, Lisa Bradley and Michael Uthoff. The reper tory has also been very large ly reworked.

Chamber Dance Project (CDP), dancers & musicians, is a company of professional artists dedicated to redefining contemporary ballet in partnership with live music in intimate settings heightening the impact on audiences. Based in Washington, DC, CDP will present two world premieres blending the classical aesthetic of ballet with the ingenuity of a street band influenced by jazz, rhythm & blues, and spirituals. Brass Connection Band will perform an original composition and improvisations for the premieres, and will join the dancers for a full company structured improvisation to complete.
