If Maxïmo Park fall into the latter category, they do a good job of hiding it. A Certain Trigger, the band's debut full-length, is rife with enough peripatetic song structures and lithe arpeggios to convince g naysayers of the Newcastle quintet's musical smarts. But, to an extent, yes, they're bandwagon-riders, and latecomers at that. The New Wave revival has already dined out on the charts.

Overall Impression - 10 Brilliant album, they certainly should have won the Mercury Prize, although Hard-Fi, Coldplay and The Go! Team would have all deserved it. The best british album of the year.

Listening to this remastered version is a quite different experience from the CD - it appears to have been created from a non-limited version of the original mix, and while loud passages still have a somewhat compressed sound to them, the extra space and punch given by the lack of clipping gives it additonal definition. Though just like on all other versions the inviting, warm garage tone of the band playing together and the songwriting is what ultimately shines through. Great pressing too, looks flawless out of the shrinkwrap and plays with minimal surface noise as well. The definitive version of this timeless "too good to top" debut.

Can anyone comment on the sound quality on this one, compared to the original LP?

Likewise, I only have the re-master (this one), but it sounds great to me; can't comment on the original pressing though

I am not comparing it to the original press, but I just bought this RP and have no complaints with the sound. I'm no audiophile, but I can say that I don't hear any distortion on the record even when turned up extra loud. Sorry I'm not more helpful... I assume they remastered it from the complaints they got 11 years ago... Either way, I say it's a great sounding record - the keys are crisp and clear under the overdriven guitars!

How to identify the red one when sealed?? Red hype sticker?
TheMoonix TheMoonix
Red vinyl here with the same sticker as black vinyl. I opened it myself.
Amerikan_Volga Amerikan_Volga
really hard to find on red vinyl not sure how many were pressed

Ok thanks for the info!Saw two red ones that have the normal sticker - without the colored vinyl info...Plus I have read both amounts pressed: 150 And 500...think last is correct

mine says limited edition red vinyl on the sticker I think its a really nice press

While almost every song on this album is stellar, this unfortunately has to be one of the worst vinyl releases I have ever heard. It sounds like Warp took the CD mixes and sent them straight through the cutting lathe without any sort of EQing or mastering for vinyl whatsoever. Sibilance and distortion are abound, to the point where the innermost tracks are nearly unlistenable. Though while the quality of this release gets a 2/5, the music most definitely gets a 5/5 from me. I remember listening to "Apply Some Pressure" unknowingly while playing the PS2 game Burnout Revenge some time ago and deciding that I NEEDED this album, and it certainly doesn't disappoint. Some of the catchiest, most fun Britpop I have yet had the pleasure to get my hands on. Just don't get the LP if you're looking for sound quality.

I have the re-master on 180g vinyl and that sounds good (well to me anyway). A classic album!

I bought this one when it came out and I agree 100% - just a terrible Vinyl master.

Why WARP why? What on earth possessed them to sign Maximo Park? A load of bobbins made even worse by the fact that virtualy every song seems like it's going to be released as a multi format single. It's releases like this that make me question the direction that WARP are taking and make me fear for their future. Why WARP why? Answers on a postcard...
