Description

Skinny Puppy was certainly confrontational. But unlike their spawn, Key and Ogre knew how to craft tunes and marry them to the most ingenious of sound patterns.

Written-By, Performer – Skinny Puppy. Original 6-track EP was released on vinyl in 1984. The version of the song, "Film", that appears on this release is different than the one on the "Bites" album. Recorded in 1984 and (tracks 3, 5 to 7) 1985 at Mushroom Studios.

Released through American Recordings on February 27, 1996, The Process was the band's final album before reforming in 2000 and releasing The Greater Wrong of the Right in 2004. Skinny Puppy's keyboardist, Dwayne Goettel, died near the end of The Process's creation, and the album was fraught with difficult production and record label intrusion.

As such, Remission features more synthpop and electro elements than Skinny Puppy would come to be known for. In 2013, Skinny Puppy's 12th album (4th since being reunited without the presence of Goettel), Weapon, was released as a sort of spiritual successor to both Remission and Bites. Apart from containing a re-recorded version of "Solvent" from Remission, Weapon was deliberately. whereas Puppy gave us Remission: an EP bursting with potential, exuding a dance-ready racket heavier than anything their contemporaries offered Track listing.

Initially envisioned as an experimental side project by cEvin Key (Kevin Crompton) while he was in the new wave band Images in Vogue, Skinny Puppy evolved into a full-time project with the addition of vocalist Nivek Ogre (Kevin Ogilvie).

1. Smothered Hope Lyrics.

Lead by cEvin Key and Nivek Ogre, the band quickly garnered an international fanbase and followed up their new success with 1985’s Bites, which produced their first underground hit, Assimilate. As usual the problems are stemming from Nettwerk Records and their utter and complete incompetence. Considering they're 15+ years overdue on proper re-masters of their Skinny Puppy catalog, I had high hopes that this was the beginning of that process

It's printed 45 RPM the back of the sleeve, but it's not...

Even at this early age and before truly reaching their full powers, Skinny Puppy were somehow leaving their peers in the dust. "Remission" remains a rewarding listen, even 32(!) years later. An amazing balance of harsh and melodic.

No surface noise on my copy. It had a lot of debris on it from the paper sleeve though. I always run new records through a cleaner because of that. Sounds great! And holds up well to the original press.

A lot of surface noise but Sounds Okay... Don't have an original pressing to Compare it to. I like how they kept it similar to the original release packaging wise. From what I have read Cevin Key didn't know anything about this re-release and had nothing to do with it (I assume Ohgr didn't either) If they did I'm sure it would have been a much better quality record. I couldn't help my self with this album because unfortunately I don't own any SP Vinyl and this is my favorite album but I don't think I will be purchasing Bites or any other Nettwerk SP re-release.

I wish they would have added the extra tracks that were on the cassette version for this reissue. I would have rebought it.

i second that motion !!!! from an ep to full length. i assume "novel" ideas don't come across nettwerk executive minds nowadays anyways. It's a miracle Nettwerk re-pressed the 1st 2 Puppy LPs at all. In the early years (Moev's ventures) there was concept, after Sarah Mclachlan appeared that was pretty much the end of it. Money talks in corporate rock.

Very pleased with this reissue. Quiet pressing, art work was reproduced well and overall great sounding.

Earache has re-issues of this and Bites up for preorder if you don't want to shell out the bucks for a second hand copy.

They're up on Amazon and Amoeba Records as well. However, the band doesn't get any money from these releases, there are no bonus tracks and the art is almost certainly going to be a photo or scan from the originals since the original art was lost. It's doubtful that they've remastered it either. Personally, I'm still on the fence about purchasing these "reissues" as I got the originals for $20 each and even then I felt like I was being ripped off for what are essentially two EPs.

Been a kiddo while this came to life was trouble-matic. Consider sharing this album to a troop of metalheads which were your pals in 1985, hysterical laughs in your face, they even dare to call it "hairdressing room music" and according to them i was turning gay by listening to such thing. Nevertheless it was funny to see the strangeness painted in their faces.Years later time paid the tribute and gave me the merit to have found this and to have aknowledge its breakground status.Any cult metal fan from the eighties should loved this album, this was something that perhaps many bands in the metal camp were trying to express, all the anger and the darkness, the dystopia and the failure, the decadence and the despair, there was only Skinny puppy to do so. They were the only able to express such a complex mix of things. Gate album for the conjunction of both darkwave and EBM. The immortal benchmark. No track is boring, focused enterely and have the mutual characteristic from being rythmical and atmospheric at the same time, something truly revolutionary by the time. This is one of those albums that are self explanatory about the general -feeling- and real atmosphere from the 80s.

SKINNY PUPPY's first show in San Francisco was at the Stone on Broadway; the opening act was SEVERED HEADS. Incredible night! Messy; bloody red corn-syrup everywhere, coming off Ogre; a girl licked my fingers. The show was booked by Savoy Tivoli's Gerry Gerrard who managed VOICE FARM, AJAX, SRL, etc. and released MOEV's immortal "Rotting Geraniums" 12-inch. Gerry's then-wife Olga managed DIAMANDA GALAS (who was dating JELLO BIAFRA at the time)... Later in New York, at the Ritz, Olga's birthday party would feature SUICIDE (with The CARS' Ric Ocasek on guitar!) headlining over FRONTLINE ASSEMBLY, MEATBEAT MANIFESTO, AJAX. Ocasek's wife, supermodel Paulina was there, too!The last time I saw Jerry, I was spinning vinyl at the Kennel Club (now known as the Independent?) on Divisadero; it might've been STEREOLAB's 1st show in SF; it was prior to their 1st Lollapalooza tour. Anyway... Jerry comes into the DJ booth, and so I ask him what's he doing there? He tells me he's managing NINE INCH NAILS, and Trent's in the audience! CYRNAI's eyes are wide, so I ask Jerry, can she (Cyrnai) meet Trent? He answers, "sure, let's go"...But, rewind back a couple of years prior to all that... A local experimental band based out of 455 Tenth Street in the SOMA district (across the street from what was then an abandoned brewery, but now a huge Costco) self-described "experimental industrial" (Ex-I) aggregation called IAO CORE (described by the press as "baby Velvets" after opening for Karen Finley; the infamous "yams up my butt" performance) along with East Bay'ers GOAT GUYS FROM HELL, and ACL, were all performing together on the lawn at UC Berkeley.Eventually resorting to simple initials, GGFH would soon sign a multiple albums deal with Peaceville UK based on recommendations from AUTOPSY/DEATH drummer Chris Reifert. Those albums by GLOBAL GENOCIDE FORGET HEAVEN would influence young UK and European extreme metal-heads that would later populate and release their own music during the peak of mid to late '90s black metal and deathgrind scene. When MORBID ANGEL first played The Omni in Oakland (with NOCTURNUS, AUTOPSY, and VON opening? My memory is fuzzy; plus I got there late!), Trey was wearing his SKINNY PUPPY shirt onstage! Earlier that day, my roommate Brad (who worked for Combat-Relativity) drove the Morbid Angel guys around the Bay looking for LAIBACH records in all the record stores that were Brad's accounts. Lol A founding member of IAO CORE, M.C. Schmidt would go on to form MATMOS, and work with BJORK on her albums.

I find it disgusting how much people are charging for this record right now. Price gougers beware.

Nettwerk is reissuing Remission and Bites in October but cEvin and Ogre won't see a dime I imagine. They're also priced at over $25 each. Doubtful it'll be remastered either so it may be best to get them second-hand if you see them. I'm sure the price will go down on those because of these reissues. Fans don't want to see their back catalogue hastily slapped together like this. We want remastered tracks, bonus tracks, expanded art and technical manuals. Obviously it would be nice if the band got paid too.

Curiously, my Opticon OPR-3001 will not scan this barcode...Release exactly as pictured (my barcode isn't damaged..)Matrix/Runout matches on disc.

While the Cassette and CD versions of Remission are nice with the 5 bonus tracks, I still will always love and dig the original 6 tracks on this 12" EP. Easily, one of if not, my most played SP records. Totally worth it to pick up a copy of the vinyl. I mean, DEFinitely check out Remission PERIOD if you're going to check out Skinny Puppy at all, but this vinyl really holds a special place in my heart.IMO the perfect place to start when getting into SP for the first time. Right at the beginning. All 6 tracks are awesome. Smothered Hope: a timeless classic, all that needs to be said. Glass Houses: a wonderfully groovy spooky jam, (if you have this original EP or the cassette, this track sounds especially awesome when pitched down;)Far Too Frail: instant catchyness and that oh-so-funky bass line, ogres vocals are poppiest here, cant help but wanna bug out to it.Solvent: dark, hollow, brooding, probably the darkest (and possibly most personal) on the record. then Sleeping Beast: kicks in and its spazz out time! sparatic and metallic, its Kraftwerk meets Joy Division. Nice Nightmare, She's a Sleeping Beast! almost as catchy as Far Too Frail. and then Brap… perfect ending. simple, thumping beat, odd spooky sounds, Andy Warhol's Dracula: 'You CANNOT hurt me you FOOL I am NOT one of YOU!' lovely blood curtling women screaming sample, and its over. 24 minutes. short. to the point. Poppy, catchy, gloomy, sinister, forshadowing everything that was about to come.

Nice review. "Kraftwerk meets Joy Division" - that's a good description for Sleeping Beast.
