Description

Atco's Collections - Quadraphonic Sound. The best 70s reel-to-reel sound. A little history of the Quad system I had in the 1970s.

Quadraphonic (or Quadrophonic and sometimes Quadrasonic) sound – equivalent to what is now called . surround sound – uses four channels in which speakers are positioned at the four corners of the listening space, reproducing signals that are (wholly or in part) independent of one another. Quadraphonic audio was the earliest consumer product in surround sound and thousands of quadraphonic recordings were made during the 1970s.

Compatible Discrete 4, also known as Quadradisc or CD-4 (not to be confused with compact disc) was as a discrete 4-channel quadraphonic system for gramophone records, commonly called "phonograph" records. The system was created by JVC and RCA in 1971 and introduced in May 1972  . This was the only discrete quadraphonic phonograph record system to gain major industry acceptance. CD-4 technology was also responsible for major improvements in stereo phonograph technology. Improvements included higher compliance, lower distortion levels, phono cartridges with a significantly higher frequency range, and new vinyl compounds for records.

I decided after carefully listening to friends' . channel and even more (Atmos et al) channels that . is right for me. It suits my desire for 'subtle' and tasteful surround sound and for 'decent' surround effects for movie time (I not only watch UHD 4K blu-rays but also enjoy my Laserdisc collection which is mostly Dolby Surround encoded with a growing number of AC-3 digital Dolby Surround titles. What makes this LP a bit confusing is that the front is labelled Quadraphonic while on the back jacket can be found the Dolby System logo- usually a sign that Dolby Surround encode/decode is what's happening here. I remember a much more experienced audiophile friend explaining that of the many types of 4 channel encoding that took place, Quadraphonic was essentially the Dolby Surround system.

Is it possible to emulate . quadraphonic (as shown in the example) or . surround with two sets of stereo speakers using VoiceMeeter? Setup A shows my current setup. I like the way it sounds; the sound seems to be widened for lack of a better way to put it. Setup B shows something I wouldn't mind trying but can't figure out how to do. Essentially I have a set of stereo speakers with no wiring for front or rear channels, just plain old left and right channels. I'd like to output the rear left and rear right to the speakers' left and right channels respectively.

But, when neer Peter Scheiber invented, then sold, the idea of Matrix recording to CBS in the late 1960s, the floodgates began to open. In Matrix quadraphonic systems four channels of audio are mathematically compressed into two channels and the resulting composite recording can be pressed into vinyl or captured on magnetic recording tape. Scheiber’s Matrix Recording system was also the basis of a fledgling company run by engineer Ray Dolby.
