John Wesley Harding" is a song by Bob Dylan that appears on his 1967 album of the same name. Dylan told Jann Wenner in a 1969 Rolling Stone interview that the song "started out to be a long ballad like maybe one of those old cowboy. you know, a real long ballad. But in the middle of the second verse, I got tired. I had a tune, and I didn't want to waste the tune; it was a nice little melody, so I just wrote a quick third verse, and I recorded that.

Their vocal similarities aside, Harding cuts a different path with his third studio album Why We Fight. Kill The Messenger actually recalls the guitar-keyboard alchemy of another British neo-classicist act, Graham Parker and the Rumour, with equally compelling results. Billed as An Experiment In Folk Noir, Harding never adheres to any strict acoustic line. As a literate singer-songwriter with a healthy knowledge and appreciation for neo-classic rock ‘n’ roll, John Wesley Harding was often compared to Elvis Costello (whose back-up group supported his debut studio album). Their vocal similarities aside, Harding cuts a different path with his third studio album Why We Fight.

After a recording alliance with producer Andy Paley spawned John Wesley Harding's first two studio albums for Sire, the singer/songwriter had suffered more Elvis Costello comparisons than anyone should have to endure. While such assessments were largely due to the vocal similarities of both Wes and . plus the fact that some of the Attractions had played on 1990's widely acclaimed Here Comes the Groom - a loyal and burgeoning pack of fans found Harding's material to be genuine enough to hang in there. Arguably his strongest album and boasting the perfect balance of folk and attitude, Harding gets down to business under the guidance of Los Lobos Steve Berlin.
