For Mahler, Amsterdam was evolving into a combination of Hotel Mengelberg and the musicians of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Some were more easily won over than others, but ultimately they all became Mahler enthusiasts. When they performed the Seventh, they pulled out all the stops for Mahler the conductor and the composer. All the subsequent chief conductors of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, from Bernard Haitink to Riccardo Chailly and Mariss Jansons, have gone on to use that very manuscript. Final respects Mahler died rather suddenly on 18 May 1911. He was almost fifty-one years old.

Mahler: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen - Ging heut' morgen übers Feld by Hermann Prey & Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra & Bernard Haitink. 5. 30. Mahler: Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen - Ich hab' ein glühend Messer. by Hermann Prey & Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra & Bernard Haitink. Prey then segues into the youthful 'Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen': again one song in particular is glowingly memorable with Prey's interpretation - 'Die zwei blauen augen von meinem Schatz'. Lieder aus Des Knaben Wunderhorn' served Mahler well in providing melodies and songs for his first four symphonies and hearing the cycle sung with the grace and fun and dignity by Jessye Norman and John Shirley-Quirk plumbs the depths of Mahler's ongoing inspiration.

Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen (Songs of a Wayfarer) is a song cycle by Gustav Mahler on his own texts. The cycle of four Lieder for medium voice (often performed by women as well as men) was written around 1884–85 in the wake of Mahler's unhappy love for soprano Johanna Richter, whom he met while conductor of the opera house in Kassel, Germany, and orchestrated and revised in the 1890s.

Hermann Prey, Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, cond. Bernard Haitink (Philips LP). Janet Baker, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, cond. Leonard Bernstein (Columbia MQ 33532). He performed song-cycles, notably Winterreise, von Hausegger's Hymns to the Night, and Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Kindertotenlieder, the latter being preserved in an effective recording. Hermine Haselböck (born 7 March 1967 in Melk, Lower Austria) is an Austrian mezzo-soprano in opera, concert and lied.
