The Milk-Eyed Mender is the debut album by harpist and singer Joanna Newsom. Unlike her next two albums, Ys and Have One on Me, Mender relies heavily on pop structuring to spin tales of loss, love, and wonder. Save for Three Little Babies, a classic tune by Texas Gladden, Newsom wrote each song and performed all the instruments. The album was received quite warmly, featuring prominently on best-of lists for both the year 2004 and the 2010s decade. The Milk-Eyed Mender Q&A.
Ys (/ˈiːs/ EESS) is the second studio album by American musician Joanna Newsom. It was released by Drag City on November 6, 2006. The album was produced by Newsom and Van Dyke Parks, recorded by Steve Albini, mixed by Jim O'Rourke, with accompanying orchestral arrangements by Van Dyke Parks. It features guest vocals from Newsom's then-boyfriend Bill Callahan and from her sister, Emily Newsom
At the time, I'd only passingly listened to her two self-released EPs, and was more familiar with her keyboard work with San Francisco's The Pleased and harp contributions to the Deerhoof/Hella side project Nervous Cop. But that's changed with the release of her first long player, The Milk-Eyed Mender
The Milk-Eyed Mender (CD, Album). Joanna Newsom, a former member of San Francisco group The Pleased, releases here a debut solo record that effortlessly blends the genres of pop and folk together using her trademark instrument the harp, as well as her rather interesting voice, as it's centre. The excellent single, "Sprout And The Bean", is also included on the release.
Milk-Eyed Mender, which follows her homemade EP releases Walnut Whales and Yarn and Glue, is rich in harvest colors. Newsom's childlike voice brings an unstudied grace to an innocent setting of songs, and such quirkiness is hard to find among most guitar-driven indie acts. From the more whimsical moments of "Peach, Plum, Pear" and "Inflammatory Writ" to the dovelike ballad "This Side of the Blue," Newsom welcomes the listener to sink into its imagination. Some may find the album to be overly sweet in spots due to Newsom's girlish voice; however, the fairytale-like appeal of Milk-Eyed Mender is far too intriguing to dismiss. Newsom exists in several musical spheres, one being a member of the Pleased, while not forgetting how wonderful it is to live in a warm place that leaves you bright-eyed and hopeful for only what is good in life.
The Milk-Eyed Mender is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Joanna Newsom, released on March 23, 2004 on the Drag City label (see 2004 in music). Newsom wrote all the songs on the album except for "Three Little Babes", a traditional Appalachian song by Texas Gladden. According to the liner notes, Newsom plays "a Lyon & Healy style 15 harp, a wurlitzer electric piano, a harpsichord, and piano.
