The complete organ works by César Franck were a centerpiece of Torvald Torén's career. Genre: Classical: Organ. We'll ship when it's back in stock. The two volumes of the Complete Organ Works by the quintessential French organ composer César Franck, demonstrate the art of 19th century organ composition at its highest. These varied and colorful works are performed by Swedish organist, Torvald Torén, who was known both in his home country as well as in France for his vast French repertoire. This recording dates back to 1974 and the Hedvig Eleonora church in Stockholm. The former organ of the church, a three manual electropneumatic instrument, had 69 stops and was built in 1948 by Magnusson, Gothenburg.

Usually, César Franck's most famous organ pieces can fit on two CDs, but the complete works occupy six discs in this trimline box set from Audite. Hans-Eberhard Roß plays the Goll Organ of St. Martin, Memmingen, a modern instrument that is modeled after the Cavaillé-Coll instruments Franck knew, and the disposition of stops is rich and orchestral, evocative of French Romantic organs at their peak.
Swedish eminent organist Torvald Torén recorded these two important volumes consisting the Complete Organ Works by the Belgian organ composer César Franck. For an organist, Franck's organ repertoire is quite small. He could also be accused for boring melodicism, a "dry" attitude to music, and for someone who lived in France, this is very rare. But it is original and expressive in its own way. Torén, who plays marvelously, recorded these works at Hedvig Eleonora Church in Stockholm, where he served as the organist for decades

César Franck, Charles-Marie Widor, and Félix-Alexandre Guilmant were important organist-composers who were inspired by the sounds made possible through Cavaillé-Coll's advances in organ building. They wrote extensively for the organ, and their works have endured. A particularly important form of organ composition in the Romantic era was the organ symphony, first seen in César Franck's Grand pièce symphonique and refined in the ten symphonies of Widor and the six of Louis Vierne. The organ symphony, comprising several movements, paralleled symphonies written for the orchestra.

César Franck, the Belgium composer born in 1822, will always be remembered for his spectacular Trois Chorales, composed in 1890. In 1890 Franck's cab was struck by another vehicle, and although seemingly not seriously injured, he did start showing symptoms which may have been the result of the knock. A vacation in Nemours followed where he composed the three organ pieces. By November he was dead, possibly of a lung infection, which may or may not have been connected to the accident. So, in the last months of his life, this man composed some of the most beautiful music that we have today.
