Live at The Cafe Au Go Go is the debut album by the American band The Blues Project, recorded live during the Blues Bag four-day concert on the evenings of November 24-27, 1965 at the Cafe Au Go Go in New York City. The recording finished up in January, 1966 at the same venue, by which time Tommy Flanders had left the band. They scaled down their usual lengthy arrangements for the album due to time constraints and record label wariness. Goin' Down Louisiana" (Muddy Waters) – 4:04.

The Blues Project's last hurrah was at the Monterey International Pop Festival held in Monterey, California, in June 1967. By this time, however, half of the band's original line-up was gone. Katz left soon thereafter, followed by Kalb.

Cafe Go-Go finds Johnny earlier in his career and Live at Soledad prison finds Johnny mid-career right in the middle of his endless boogie phase. Live at The Cafe Go-Go is recoreded with Muddy Waters band (Muddy always had the best bands!) including the great Otis Spann on Piano. Muddy even plays guitar on one of the tunes. Sound quality is excellent and John Live is in fine form, but a little restrain. This is a great album for anyone who enjoys the blues, live blues, John Lee, or enjoys Otis Spann. Album should be the staple of any basic bblues collection. This live compilation, especially the 8 tracks from the Cafe au Go-Go which are backed by Muddy Waters band (yeah, THAT Muddy Waters), is a must-own for anyone who wants to experience the depth and power of John Lee Hooker. This is the blues in its finest 70 minutes.

Delta Blues Detroit Blues Electric Blues Electric Delta Blues Regional Blues. This reissue contains the entirety of Hooker's 1966 Cafe Au Go-Go set, and adds five bonus tracks from his 1972 album, Live at Soledad Prison. Luther Tucker is one of the guitarists for the Soledad portion, which has a somewhat more electric, rock-oriented sound than the Au Go-Go material. The disc only has five of the seven cuts from the original Soledad album, but that's okay, as the two missing items featured John Lee Hooker, Jr. on lead vocals, rather than Hooker himself.

In 1966, they recorded Live At Cafe Au Go Go and Projections for the Verve Forecast label. By early '67 when work began on The Blues Project Live At Town Hall (FT/FTS 3025), Kooper had left the group (Katz followed him later in the year). There's only one cut here actually recorded at Town Hall. The balance is other "live" a performances at Stony Brook College, plus studio tracks with added applause. Where There's Smoke" is a decent Kooper leftover. The album closing "Wake Me, Shake Me" nicely illustrates how Blues Project sounded in-concert: tight, intense and improvisational. - Annie Van Auken, rockasteria. download (mp3 @256 kbs)
