Guitarist Bireli Lagrene, who started out as a young teenager very influenced by Django Reinhardt, has made a strong attempt to get away from the Reinhardt gypsy image. On this set, his guitar is often very rock-oriented and, although there are some acoustic moments, the emphasis is on fusion originals.

Foreign Affairs is an enjoyable jazz-rock album recorded in New York in 1988. Bireli Lagrene was only 21 when he made this album. Lagrene was a prodigy who was equally at home with electric and accoustic jazz. To be honest, this album sounded better 20 years ago. I loved this record when I bought it, but I've probably played it too much over the years. Today it seems pleasant and undemanding. The album allows Bireli to demonstrate his phenomenal chops. In terms of skill and technique, he was up there with Di Meola and McLaughlin.

Biréli Lagrène (born 4 September 1966) is a French Manouche jazz guitar virtuoso who came to prominence in the 1980s for his Django style. He often performs in swing, jazz fusion and post-bop styles. Lagrène was born on 4 September 1966 in Saverne, Alsace, France, into a Romani family and community. His father and grandfather were guitarists, and he was raised in the gypsy guitar tradition.
