Dave Pajo (Slint, Tortoise) also makes a guest appearance.

Turnstyles & Junkpiles is Pullman's debut album. Released on August 11, 1998, by Thrill Jockey, Turnstyles & Junkpiles was recorded live to analog 2-track with two AKG 451-EB microphone in the Cool Blue Cave by Bundy K. Brown in November 1997, with two exceptions: "Two Parts Water" and "Beacon & Kent", which were recorded at home by Curtis Harvey and Chris Brokaw, respectively.

Just as I would indulge myself in the quieter moments of a REX album; I now have an entire album of significant tuneful solo steel-string guitar portraits with which to view. Even tho this is considered a Bundy Brown project (recorded in several spaces but mainly in Bundy's loft the Cool Blue Cave); it's Curtis Harvey's tunes that touch me the most profoundly.

Highly recommended to fans of releases on Fahey's Revenant label or early Windham Hill solo guitar records, Turnstyles & Junkpiles is an honest tribute to some of the acoustic guitar's most important innovators. The fact that is was produced by four artists on the outskirts of conventional rock music makes it even more satisfying.

Nice to see musicians with diverse backgrounds and projects record an album that shows an appreciation for a good melody. One of the best albums I have purchased in a long time.
