Description

Black on Both Sides is the debut studio album by American rapper Mos Def, released on October 12, 1999 by Rawkus and Priority Records. Prior to its recording, Mos Def had collaborated with Talib Kweli for the album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star in 1998, which raised high expectations for a solo effort by the former. Black on Both Sides features an emphasis on live instrumentation and socially conscious lyrics.

True, Black on Both Sides isn't flawless. If you don't like Tribe-style laidback beats, you may have a more difficult time getting into this. Mos Def's singing on tracks like "Climb" and "Umi Says" is a bit hard to stomach, too. And then there's the matter of his sporadic introductory speeches, which occasionally sound like the pseudo-prophetic ramblings of a guy who might benefit from one less hit from the bong. But this, honestly, is nit-picking.

And sure it could break the album at times but these singy moments are still great espically UMI says which is such a powerful song. And all The features on this album despite only being like 3 features. Are still a great addition cause busta on Do it now is insane.

To truly understand Black on Both Sides in the way it is intended one must first realize Mos Def’s (I will from here on refer to the artist as Yasiin Bey, his chosen name) initial success in Black Star. The Black Star movement is interesting on a series of levels. It opposes the very foundations on which it’s built. There would be no Black Star without the East/West rivalry, these two young black poets had reached boiling point. In the wake of Christopher Wallace’s death, the two dropped their then ongoing projects to take the power back. Black on Both Sides is as much of an album as it is documentation. It’s documentation of the solidifying of the shift of hip-hop from the violence and drug culture that traveled along with it in the 90s. It was the fresh start that hip-hop deserved, whether anything cultivated immediately following it was redundant.

Black on Both Sides is the debut solo album of American rapper Mos Def, released October 12, 1999 on Rawkus Records. Black on Both Sides features an emphasis on live instrumentation and socially-conscious lyrics. On February 2, 2000, the album was certified Gold in sales by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), following sales in excess of 500,000 copies.

Album · 1999 · 17 Songs. But the album’s centerpiece is "Umi Says," a soulful groove about seizing the moment. It soothes like an evening stroll, and Mos' chant of "I want black people to be free rings as powerfully today as it did in 1999. Black On Both Sides Mos Def. Hip-Hop/Rap. Listen on Apple Music.

Mos Def released his solo debut album Black on Both Sides in October 1999, also through Rawkus. With the 17th anniversary of Black on Both Sides being released,. Black on Both Sides is the debut solo album by Yasiin Bey, then Mos Def, released October 12, 1999 on Rawkus Records. The project features an emphasis on live. Shop Black on Both Sides.
