Barnum was once described as the man who 'invented showbusiness'. Once Barnum had fill, neatly reinvented himself as campaigning politician. But he regularly exploited mentally and physically disabled, and deformed. Legendary American showman . Barnum earned many sobriquets during his 80 years. He was, variously, the man who ‘invented showbusiness’, the ‘Shakespeare of advertising’, the ‘Prince of Humbug’ and the ‘world’s greatest fraudster’. He once exhibited the skeleton of a ‘mermaid’ (a monkey sewn on to a fish carcass), claimed to have President George Washington’s 160-year-old nanny in his ensemble, and routinely exploited black people, the mentally and physically disabled, and deformed - including conjoined twins and a child with dwarfism - in the name of profit.
Barnum was never associated with a Phillip Carlyle or an Anne Wheeler, as in the movie. But he did have partners after retiring from the museum business. Barnum partnered with circus owners Dan Castello and William C. Coup to launch a traveling museum, which he called The Greatest Show on Earth. In his 60s, Barnum then teamed up with James A. Bailey and James L. Hutchinson, going into the circus business. Their main attraction was Jumbo the elephant from the Royal Zoological Society in London. The venture was later renamed Barnum & Bailey Greatest Show on Earth in 1887.
Barnum died in 1891 and the Circus was acquired by the Ringling Brothers in 1907, a venture that led to the formation of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1919. Throughout all of these changes one thing remained consistent - the presentation of human attractions or freaks. From the FeeJee Mermaid to General Tom Thumb to Siamese twins Chang and Eng Bunker, Barnum presented intriguing individuals with unique bodies and minds as wild and exotic marvels.
In fact, when Barnum bought Jumbo that was already his name. Keepers at the London Zoo (Jumbo's owners before Barnum) named him Jumbo, a derivation of an African word for elephant. The publicity Barnum brought to Jumbo eventually coined the word "jumbo" as meaning large.
to spot Jack's Grammy tucked in an inconspicuous corner of the check out display case. I asked the sweet ladies working the counter if it was real "Yes! Would you like to hold it?". Of course I did! They let me hold and look at it, and man, out of nowhere I started to cry. That was an amazing experience and completely unexpected. That made me whole trip to Nashville!
