Halford's debut album, "Resurrection", was a solid, no frills excursion in straightforward heavy metal. Two years later, the previous lineup reunited for the solid followup album "Crucible". While elements of the the previous effort's traditional metal shined through, "Crucible" is a fairly different beast. The production, as a number of the songs, are heavier or moodier, and the sound is more modern with some groovish elements. It's not as awful as a lot of people want to make it out to be, but there are problems.

Songs such as "Betrayal" and "Wrath of God" highlight Crucible, an album where Rob's signature falsetto wail is distinct and picture-perfect, while bandmates Pat Lachman, Mike Chlasciak, Bobby Jarzombek, and Ray Riendeau have seemingly topped their magnificent work on Halford's previous outing. Crucible keeps things fresh, as Rob himself states that he dared not retread on themes abundant on Resurrection; as a result, this is yet another classic metal album for the next generation.

Info from the booklet: Crucible was created in room 303 of the Park Manor from 6 writing sessions held during March '01 through August '01. The exception to the just-noted is 'Trail of Tears' which was written in the band's Los Angeles rehearsal room a couple days before formal tracking commenced - November 1, 2001.
