Mad River/Paradise Bar & Grill gathers both albums from the San Francisco '60s cult faves onto one CD. The dark, haunting psych of Mad River's "Merciful Monks," "Amphetamine Gazelle," and "Wind Chimes" and the gentler, countrified feel of Paradise's "Equinox" and "Academy Cemetery" make this two-fer an interesting document of one of psychedelia's most intriguing and obscure bands.
Mad River's first album has always been essential to any San Fransisco Sound collection. Along with Country Joe & The Fish, they defined the unique Berkeley rock scene. Although they weren't invited to perform at Monterey Pop, they set up a stage on a large trailer outside the venue and played a legendary set that got a lot of buzz at the time. Paradise Bar & Grill has a lot of acoustic work on it and some good songs ("Revolution's in My Pockets"), but I don't I like it quite as much as their first effort.
