Herbert von Karajan directs the Berlin Philharmonic in an Italianate take of Beethoven's Fourth Symphony and an assured rendering of the Fifth, while the "Pastoral" Symphony, conceived and derected by Hugo Niebeling in 1967, is a revolutionary mix of styles - Fantasia meets Expressionism meets film noir. Cast: Berliner Philharmoniker Conductor - Herbert von Karajan.

Herbert von Karajan conducts the Berliner Philharmoniker on this highly-acclaimed marathon recording of all nine Beethoven symphonies, originally released in 1963. Von Karajan recorded the entire cycle of Beethoven's symphonies four times during his career; this recording ranks as the finest by many critics and fans. Never before had all nine Beethoven's symphonies been recorded and released as an integrally planned subscription set. The financial risk was substantial, and it was estimated that record label Deutsche Grammophon would have to sell 100,000 boxes just to break even.

It is the second of four cycles of Beethoven's nine symphonies that von Karajan conducted, and the first of three for the German record label Deutsche Grammophon. The complete set was first released in 1962 in Europe, and as a result the cycle of symphonies is not generally known as the 1963 cycle. This distinguishes it from a 1977 cycle of nine Beethoven symphonies made by the same combination of orchestra and conductor for the label Deutsche Grammophon and a subsequent cycle issued using the then-prevailing 16-bit digital recording technology, also for Deutsche Grammophon, in 1984

Under Herbert von Karajan the Berliner Philharmoniker developed their very own performance culture, characterised by a beauty of sound, enchanting legati, virtuosity and perfection. He preferred to concentrate on the classical-romantic repertoire: Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Wagner and Strauss. In addition, he devoted himself to the Second Viennese School and leading composers of the early 20th century like Ravel, Stravinsky and Debussy, taking occasional excursions into the contemporary era with works by Messiaen and Henze, even Penderecki.

The Berlin Philharmonic (German: Berliner Philharmoniker) is a German orchestra based in Berlin. It is traditionally ranked in the top handful of orchestras in the world, distinguished amongst peers for its virtuosity and compelling sound. The orchestra’s history has always been tied to its chief conductors, many of whom have been authoritative and controversial characters, such as Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert von Karajan.
