Recording details: March 1998 Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge, United Kingdom Produced by Morten Winding Engineered by Antony Howell & Julian Millard Release date: April 1999 Total duration: 73 minutes 0 seconds. Trinity College Chapel Choir seems ideally suited to this music. Diction is good, intonation flawless and the antiphonal effects well balanced. A worthy addition to the collection’ (Early Music). Other albums in this series.

The Trinity choristers, however, are gorgeous. They articulate the text well, without drowning it in consonant sounds, and their homogeneity of sound is spectacular. There is a sort of broad warmth in this performance that is immensely appealing and reminds the listener of why the British choral tradition continues to survive all sorts of revisionism. The bottom line is that this beautifully recorded disc makes an excellent choice for listeners who want a performance of Byrd's motets in the traditional mold.

Whilst the mixed-voice Choir of Trinity College needs little introduction, their chosen composer for this disc possibly does. Incredibly though, whilst Peter Philips is a relatively neglected composer these days, he was, after William Byrd, the most-published English composer of the age. This disc amply demonstrates why, thanks in no small part to a stunning performance from the Trinity Choir. Philips trained as a choirboy at St Paul's Cathedral, and may even have studied keyboard with Byrd. The warmly subtle acoustic of Trinity College chapel provides the final gloss on what already feels like choral perfection. The Choir of Trinity College, Cambridge is a mixed choir whose primary function is to sing choral services in the Tudor chapel of Trinity College, Cambridge. In January 2011, Gramophone named the choir the fifth best choir in the world. The choir has taken various forms since its foundation, and has existed in its present form since 1982 when, shortly after the admission of women to the college, female voices were used for the first time for the choir’s top lines
