John Tejada shifts to the defocus label for his second album, THE MATRIX OF US, and true to that label’s aesthetics, Summer Spell has a warm, electro shuffle, while the spoken word and operatic vocals on Genetical Love act as a counterpoint to the piano and looped string section before the beat kicks in to rein in the proceedings. But Disappear goes for an instrumental slide into your aural cavity, and the deeper bass of Can’t Tell Time Anything continues the easygoing vibe.

John Tejada shifts to the defocus label for his second album, THE MATRIX OF US, and true to that label’s aesthetics, “Summer Spell” has a warm, electro shuffle, while the spoken word and operatic vocals on “Genetical Love” act as a counterpoint to the piano and looped string section before the beat kicks in to rein in the proceedings. But “Disappear” goes for an instrumental slide into your aural cavity, and the deeper bass of “Can’t Tell Time Anything” continues the easygoing vibe. The kick drums finally arrive in earnest on “So Strange to Explain” and “Reach for the Lights” though the angular melodies remain. “To the Northern Sky” slows the tempo back down to a drift with a gentle guitar and some scratches, while “Red Lit Night” twinkles with spry synths. “Series of Meaningful Movements” closes the album back on a downtempo, electro note. A definite change of pace from his other work, but his talents still shine through.
