Pete Fountain, a clarinetist who brought the traditional jazz of his native New Orleans to a national audience through frequent appearances on the Lawrence Welk and Johnny Carson television shows, died on Saturday in New Orleans. He was 86. The cause was heart failure, said Benny Harrell, Mr. Fountain’s son-in-law and manager. Fountain was a mainstay of the New Orleans music scene for more than six decades, a familiar sight at Mardi Gras and the annual Jazz and Heritage Festival
Among the most famous of all New Orleans jazz musicians, clarinetist Pete Fountain exemplifies the Dixieland jazz style and was instrumental in making the sound famous throughout the world. Presented here is a vintage audiophile album featuring Pete leading his band through a classic set of New Orleans Dixieland standards. All selections have been newly remastered. Although a personnel listing is given for the entire set, it only applies to the four live songs, and even then there is no second reed (despite the listing of Lester Bouchon).
