Iron Maiden may have seemed to have hit a rut after their commercial and artistic peak of the mid-Eighties by the time co-lead guitarist Adrian Smith left the band in 1990. Janick Gers was brought in and while many feel Maiden skipped a beat here, I personally don't have a lot of bad things to say about the resulting album, & Prayer for the Dying'. It is a back to basics, stripped down record as many have said and is comparatively short compared to previous classics. While being a little more raw, a familiar, yet classic Iron Maiden sound is evident on this album. Good riffs, tight, concise arrangements, and there's an economy of song craft here, nothing is epic, overblown, or drawn out. The style is a little different than the 2 or 3 previous Maiden records, being not as progressive, rather it's more of a return to "classic", early days Iron Maiden, consise and more direct, and that's why this album is effective.

With their first album of the '90s, Iron Maiden wanted to return to basics. Comparable to their more straightforward early work, No Prayer for the Dying quickly shot up the charts all over the world, but it was clear that the songwriting wasn't up to snuff when compared to such classics as Killers or Number of the Beast. The album also signaled the debut of new guitarist Janick Gers, best known for his stint in Ian Gillan's solo band and on Bruce Dickinson's solo album, Tattooed Millionaire.
