Technically, Danilo Pérez's Motherland is Latin jazz because it fuses jazz with Latin elements. But it isn't Afro-Cuban jazz, and it isn't the type of Cubop that people associate with Machito, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Cal Tjader, and Poncho Sanchez. Instead, this introspective, chance-taking CD finds Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez combining post-bop with a variety of Latin rhythms, everything from Panamanian tamborito to the samba and baião of Brazil

Danilo Pérez (born December 29, 1965) is a Panamanian pianist, composer, educator, and a social activist. His music is a blend of Panamanian roots with elements of Latin American folk music, jazz, European impressionism, African, and other musical heritages that promote music as a multi-dimensional bridge between people.

Motherland is Danilo Perez's most conceptually ambitious project to date, throwing today's definition of "jazz" even further up for grabs. With the support of a large cast of guest musicians, Perez embarks on a celebration of his native Panama.

In 1994, he released his first solo album, Danilo Perez, and then his second, The Journey, in 1995. He performed The Journey in concert with the Panamanian Symphony Orchestra the same year. David Sanchez and Giovanni Hidalgo play on the album, which was recorded in two days at the Power Station in New York City
