John "Johnny" Keating (10 September 1927 – 28 May 2015) was a Scottish musician, songwriter and arranger. Keating was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. After studying piano and trombone, he taught himself how to arrange and compose in his teens. From 1952, he worked with British big band leader Ted Heath as a trombonist, but within two years Heath asked him to become his primary arranger.

Keating Sound/Straight Ahead. Johnny Keating rose to fame when he was Ted Heath's principal arranger in the Fifties. His contributions to the Heath band book can be savoured on many Vocalion reissues of that fine orchestra. In the late Fifties, Keating struck out on his own and this disc combines two albums from 1964 and 1965. On both Keating employs an unusual and large line up of musicians.

John Keating is the charismatic, energetic English teacher who inspires the students of Welton Academy to rebel against their families and other teachers. His name echoes that of John Keats, the famous English Romantic poet whose celebration of life and originality may have inspired Keating’s own. A former student of Welton, as well as a brilliant Rhodes scholar, Keating begins teaching at Welton in 1959 and immediately makes an impression on his students, who aren’t used to such exciting, fascinating lessons
