The Rough Guide to the Music of Ethiopia is a world music compilation album originally released in 2012. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, the release contains two discs: an overview of the music of Ethiopia-focusing mainly on 21st century pop-is found on Disc One, while Disc Two features dub-style musician Invisible System. The compilation was curated by Dominic Raymond-Barker and Phil Stanton, co-founder of the World Music Network, who was also the producer.

By the twentieth century, jazz (and subsequent African-based musical forms including soul, funk, and Cuban rumba) travelled back across the Atlantic, first through recordings and later by artists on tour. There, African musicians immediately recognized the source roots, adapted some, altered others, and in the process, created entirely new musical forms. In Ethiopia, one of the first major musicians to lay the groundwork for Ethio-jazz was Nerses Nalbandian.

Compilation album by Various artists. Mekurya reached an international audience when his album Negus of Ethiopian Sax was re-released as part of the Ethiopiques CD series. Mekurya's playing style has been compared to free jazz, but developed in isolation from it during the early 1950s. Mekurya has said he is unfamiliar with either Ornette Albert Ayler. The Rough Guide To Psychedelic Africa is a world music compilation album released in 2012 featuring 60s and 70s African popular music. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, the album contains two discs: an overview of the genre on Disc One, a "bonus" Disc Two highlighting Victor Uwaifo.

Despite the lack of the more ancient sounds of Ethiopia (there is one piece played on the ancient begena here), it's an outstanding album, with an interesting focus on some of the slickest, jazziest, and yet most foreign-sounding music many Westerners are likely to hear. Give it a spin or two just for curiosity's sake, but keep listening to the hooks.

Here's an interesting first: after a long string of successful compilations in the Rough Guide world music series, one that actually falls flat. The subject matter could not be broader-there is probably no single international genre as enormous and diverse as rock. Part of the World Music Network Rough Guides series, the album covers the genre's growth from the turn of the 20th century to the 1930s, largely focusing on the "Jazz Age". The compilation was produced by Phil Stanton, co-founder of the World Music Network

Swinging Addis is thriving once again, with the distinctive ancient-sounding tones of Ethiopia blending with modern jazz interpretations to create a totally unmistakable fusion. From the legendary innovators Mulatu Astatke and Getatchew Mekuria to today's new generation of artists, this Rough Guide celebrates this burgeoning and most captivating of musical scenes.

World Music Network, Music Rough Guides. The lack of any Mulatu Astatke offerings here is truly astounding. This compilation can't claim to be a true guide to Ethiopian music without the inclusion of the father of Ethio-jazz. Reply Notify me Helpful. Marketplace 0 6 For Sale from €. 5.
