California rock duo No Age comes through with their most abstract release yet with An Object. What did you think of this album?
With An Object, their fourth full-length album, No Age has forgone the straight and narrow route, landing in a strange and unexpected place, feet planted in fresh, fertile soil. This new LP finds drummer/vocalist Dean Spunt exploding from behind his kit, landing percussive blows with amplified contact mics, 4-string bass guitars, and prepared speakers, as well as traditional forms of lumber and metal. Meanwhile, guitarist Randy Randall corrals his previously lush, spastic, sprawling arrangements into taught, refined, rats’ nests . An Object was recorded by longtime No Age collaborator Facundo Bermudez and No Age at Gaucho’s Electronics in Los Angeles. released August 20, 2013.
No Age's strikingly spare third album proves that all the reverb, feedback, and velocity of their past work were hardly afterthoughts or subversive tactics to disguise pop songs. For the most part, An Object consists of potential rock songs denied everything they need to actually rock. Featured Tracks: Play Track. An Impression" - No AgeVia SoundCloud. An Object is protest music.

For their fourth album, they’ve broken their sound open and let the light come in. The result is a record that feels simultaneously more scratchily awkward and expansively ambitious. If previous No Age albums have felt a little one-paced, there’s a welcome unpredictability to ‘An Object’.
No Age's third full-length, not counting the compilation 'Weirdo Rippers,' is three years in the making. That's a long time, considering their first two LPs and 'Weirdo Rippers' all came out in a three-year span. In interviews, Dean Spunt and Randy Randall have talked about the difficulty of writing this album, at least until they arrived at a concept: 'An Object.
Tracks like these represent one character that An Object takes on, finding No Age at their most introspective and subdued. The incredible "I Won't Be Your Generator" falls into this side of the album as well, finding the same propulsive balance between emotional vulnerability and caustic noisiness that made Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation a perfect album. Amid these roaming lucid dreams are Ramones-meets-Ride blasts of punk like "C'mon, Stimmung" and the one-chord Krautcore of album opener "No Ground.
