The Understanding is the second studio album by Norwegian electronic music duo Röyksopp. It was released on 22 June 2005 by Wall of Sound. The Understanding debuted at number 13 on the UK Albums Chart, with 22,466 copies sold in its first week. The album was certified gold by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) on 1 December 2006, and had sold 103,500 copies in the United Kingdom by March 2009.

When the Norwegian production duo Röyksopp dropped their first album, Melody . it sounded as though they were on a stopover from another planet. Otherworldly samples and a crisp production sense combined to make the singles "Eple" and "Sparks" perfect examples of the downbeat form and near-ubiquitous inclusions on chillout compilations.

The Understanding still contains the film score samples, and lush electronics of their debut but the duo have opted for a more mature sound, combining creative song-writing skills with their now more pop influenced sound. The vocal-free tracks scattered through here are as much of a change from the sun on the last album: It's "Röyksopp's Night Out" stuff, sometimes even deeper and lost-in-spacier than the vocal spots. Alpha Male" kicks a few of this year's rock moves, but it can't help making them rush instead of stomp. A couple of slow-funk touches give you a foothold on the earth (see "Someone Like Me"), but the vibe can still come close to the Marianna Trench pumped full of meringue. Nick Hornby included Röyksopp's Night Out in his book 31 Songs alongside choices by Dylan and Springsteen, though for the Norwegians the compliment was backhanded. Their song, once a furtive delight for Hornby, had become so omnipresent that it now reeked of "vacuous monied hip". Hipsters themselves, Torbjörn Brundtland and Svein Berge may have empathised, having evolved from a dance scene where cool is currency, but thankfully they haven't taken a blind bit of notice
