His 1964 live album Live at the Star Club, Hamburg is regarded by music journalists and fans as one of the wildest and greatest live rock albums ever. In 1968, Lewis made a transition into country music and had hits with songs such as "Another Place, Another Time". This reignited his career, and throughout the late 1960s and 1970s he regularly topped the country-western charts; throughout his seven-decade career, Lewis has had 30 songs reach the top 10 on the "Billboard Country and Western Chart". He was also a member of the inaugural class inducted into the Memphis Music Hall of Fame. In 1989, his life was chronicled in the movie Great Balls of Fire, starring Dennis Quaid. In 2003, Rolling Stone listed his box set All Killer, No Filler: The Anthology number 242 on their list of "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". In 2004, they ranked him number 24 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

50 Tom Waits – ‘Glitter And Doom Live’. 49 My Morning Jacket – ‘Okonokos’. Why it’s so good: A lethargic but epic extended set from the Kentucky space rockers comprises perhaps the best use of the Fillmore’s stage this side of the millenium. 37 James Brown – ‘Live At The Apollo’. Why it’s so good: Recorded at his expense and against the label’s wishes, this went on to spend 66 weeks in the charts, thanks to its mix of vintage JB hits and crowd euphoria. It’s thankfully bereft of most of his overplayed hits too. 36 Queen – ‘Live At Wembley Stadium’. Why it’s so great: It’s got the fantastically outrageous Freddie Mercury.

This live double-album from English blues-rock band Humble Pie was recorded over two days in May 1971 at the famous Fillmore East Club in Manhattan, which closed a month later. Humble Pie were made up of singer and guitarist Steve Marriott, guitarist Peter Frampton, bassist Greg Ridley and drummer Jerry Shirley. Live At The Apollo captures The Godfather Of Soul as a young, vibrant singer, brilliantly backed by his vocal trio, The Famous Flames, who were Bobby Byrd, Bobby Bennett and Lloyd Stallworth. By the end of the 60s, The Who had gained a reputation as one of the greatest live rock bands in the world, and Live At Leeds deservedly heads this list of the best live albums in history.

The live album Weld captured the best moments on a two-CD set. The 14-minute rendition of "Like A Hurricane" remains one of the best version of the tune, while concert staples "Cortez The Killer," "Powderfinger" and "Hey Hey, My My (In The Black)" have never sounded so vital. Joni Mitchell's first live album arrived at the peak of her fame. The four nights in November, 1961 that John Coltrane and various lineups of his group were recorded at a Manhattan club yielded a lot more music than the three tracks here - most of his subsequent album, Impressions, was drawn from those gigs, too. But Live!
