Jon Mendle is a young classical guitarist who performs on seven- and eleven-string guitars. A graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory, he has recently released an album of 18th century German music by . In this interview Jon talks about his approach to extended-range guitars, his experience performing with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, and more. C. rg: Earlier in 2011 you released a recording of 18th-century German music, L’Infidele, featuring works by . Bach, Falckenhagen, and Weiss, all played on your 11-string archguitar. Tell me about how you went adapting this music to the instrument-two of the works are originally for 13-course lute, and the Bach is a keyboard piece.
This exquisite piece is performed here by San Francisco-based guitarist Jon Mendle, who is a product of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s undergraduate and graduate programs, and has carved out an interesting career for himself working often as a chamber musician-he’s a member of the San Francisco Guitar Quartet and several years ago toured with Yo-Yo M. He is a specialist in 19th century music and usually performs either on a contemporary reproduction of a 7-string heptacorde (famously championed by Napoléon Coste) or an 11-string Archguitar, which he calls a hybrid of early and modern guitars, making it ideal to play a wide range of early music as well as certain modern and impressionist works.
Jon Mendle has already made a name for himself in guitarist circles. Bach’s friends and sons. Mendle’s sensitive phrasing and gorgeous tone bring to life some beautiful and seldom-heard 18th-century repertoire. Guitarists are very familiar with the solo lute, violin, and cello works of Johann Sebastian Bach, but the outstanding revelation on this recording is Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s Prussian Sonata V, originally written for harpsichord. Weiss’ Sonata: L’Infidele, a six-movement dance suite influenced by Turkish music, is made vivid by Mendle’s wide palette of tone colors and dynamics. The concluding Paysanne is unusual, exciting, and colored by biting dissonances. Adam Falckenhagen, a student of Weiss, was the right age to have been either a younger brother of . Bach or an older brother of .

But it's the guitarist Jon Mendle who gives this recording the vibrancy of youth. He's done an admirable job of adapting lute repertoire to a relatively unusual instrument and infuses an energy that can elude even major artists on big labels. I would characterize it as warm and natural. Technically Mendle's playing is strong, with good control over ornamentation and some impressively smooth pull-offs. The photo used as the cover for this album has hung on the wall at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for a few years now and it always seemed to call for a story. One person found this helpful.
