Schumann then focused his musical energies on composing. Schumann's published compositions were written exclusively for the piano until 1840; he later composed works for piano and orchestra; many Lieder (songs for voice and piano); four symphonies; an opera; and other orchestral, choral, and chamber works. Works such as Kinderszenen, Album für die Jugend, Blumenstück, Sonatas and Albumblätter are among his most famous. His writings about music appeared mostly in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik (New Journal for Music), a Leipzig-based publication which he jointly founded

The Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54 was completed in the year 1845 and is the only piano concerto written by the German Romantic composer Robert Schumann. The work was premiered in Dresden on December 4, 1845. Schumann had earlier worked on several piano concerti: he began one in E-flat major in 1828, from 1829–31 he worked on one in F major, and in 1839, he wrote one movement of a concerto in D minor. None of these works were completed.

The Schumann Cto. features Eugene Istomin, part of the famous Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio; he died in 2003. Although a staple at Columbia Records and a fixture at the Marlboro Festival (in 1975 he married Pablo Casals widow after the great man died), Istomin never achieved a prominent profile as a solo pianist. Like Malcolm Frager, he was immensely respected among musicians but somewhat reticent as a keyboard personality. That lends a certain restraint to the Schumann, which can be enjoyed for Istomin's taste and sure phrasing
