I Thank You" is a song written by David Porter and Isaac Hayes originally recorded by Sam & Dave, released in early 1968. The single was Sam & Dave's final release on Stax Records, reaching on the Billboard Pop Singles chart and on the R&B chart. Shortly after its release, Stax severed its distribution deal with Atlantic Records and Sam & Dave, who were actually signed to Atlantic and loaned out to Stax, began recording for Atlantic proper.

Sam & Dave were an American soul and rhythm and blues (R&B) duo who performed together from 1961 through 1981. The tenor (higher) voice was Sam Moore (born Samuel David Hicks on October 12, 1935 in Winchester, Georgia), and the baritone/tenor (lower) voice was David Prater (born May 9, 1937, Ocilla, Georgia; died April 9, 1988, Sycamore, Georgia). During 1965–68 they had consistent R&B chart success, including 10 consecutive top 20 singles and 3 consecutive top 10 albums.

Issued in 1968 after the mega hits, "Hold On, I'm Comin'" and "Soul Man," Sam & Dave became interested in the emerging funk sounds happening throughout the R&B scene. Thankfully, so was the writing team of Isaac Hayes and David Porter, who wrote one of he singles from this set, the burning, gritty "I Thank Yo. Many don't see I Thank You as such a strong recording in contrast to the pair's earlier showings, but simply put, they're wrong
