Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark is the self-titled debut album by Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, released in 1980. It peaked at number 27 in the UK Albums Chart. Electricity" and "Red Frame/White Light" were low charting singles taken from the record.

1-6 is an apparent alternate version to the album version 2-5 was supposed to be 'Wrappup' as listed on release. The album track 'All Wrapped Up' which is already on CD1 plays instead. 2-8 is the second part of the original full 12" version, the one that includes a dub version as a separate intro. Tracks 2-11 to 2-15 are previously unreleased.

In 1983, the amazing success that Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark had built up with their Architecture And Morality album seemed to disappear in the unloyal world of pop. Their superb Dazzle Ships album, whilst (quite rightly) being critically acclaimed was less of a success commercially. A rethink was required, and the following year they returned with the triumphant Junk Culture. On Junk Culture it fitted in nicely because there was no one true style. The instrumental title track was a strange choice for album opener and given their previous fall from grace, maybe a little rash, but the calculated risk proved to be well-timed. The albums second single, Tesla Girls is as perfect as pop singles get and an excerpt from which is ironically currently being ‘borrowed’ on a TV advert for a loan company.

Smarting from Dazzle Ships' commercial failure, the band had a bit of a rethink when it came to their fifth album - happily, the end result showed that the group was still firing on all fours. While very much a pop-oriented album and a clear retreat from the exploratory reaches of previous work, Junk Culture was no sacrifice of ideals in pursuit of cash.
