Spooked is the fourteenth studio album by Robyn Hitchcock. It was recorded in collaboration with Gillian Welch and David Rawlings at Woodlands Studio in Nashville, TN in 2004, and released later that year. The set comprises twelve new recordings, all Hitchcock compositions with the exception of "Trying to Get to Heaven Before They Close the Door", a cover of a Bob Dylan song. The tracks revisit Hitchcock's 1980s style, containing in their lyrics portrayals of several eccentric characters, surreal situations and scenarios, and several references to death, one of Hitchcock's. Hitchcock dedicates the album to 'The Dark Princess', using the title of a track from 1999's Jewels for Sophia as a pseudonym for his partner Michele Noach. Studio album by. Robyn Hitchcock.

Listening to the opening line from Robyn Hitchcock's splendid new album, you might be forgiven for thinking that our man is making a bid for the Eurovision Song Contest. bong-bing-bong', he sings. But, no, Hitchcock is not following in the footsteps of his one-time compatriot Kimberly Rew, who penned the Euro hit "Walking On Sunshine" with Katrina and the Waves. In fact, "Television" is a wistful, biting serenade to telly, in all its manifest forms: 'You're the Devil's fishbowl honey, I undress before your lies. Spooked, Hitchcock's latest all-acoustic venture, finds him in cohorts with Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, the acoustic partnership that has done so much to raise the profile of American indie folk in recent years. Welch contributes acoustic guitar, bass and drums. Rawlings tackles the Dobro (on the track "SometimesA Blonde") and, curiously, the Wurlitzer.
It’s not the al. ountry experience you might expect. There are no pedal steel guitars whipping past the tumbleweeds and the harmonies never head towards traditional country fare. Hitchcock knocks things askew with his usual lyrical irreverence ( Some people are lost, They wake up in foil and permafrost he sings for Everybody Needs Love ). The Dylan cover, Tryin’ to Get to Heaven Before They Close the Door, shows Hitchcock’s spooked side, as he sounds resigned to life’s fatality, while Creeped Out works a groovy, stalking beat.
