Although Kiss' self-titled debut performed respectably on the charts, it was not the blockbuster they had hoped for. With the album fading on the charts in the summer of 1974, Kiss was summoned back into the studio to work on a follow-up. Producers Richie Wise and Kenny Kerner were onboard again, and even though the sonics are muddier (and more filler is present in the compositions), Hotter Than Hell is another quintessential Kiss release. Many of the songs have been forgotten over the years (few have been featured in concert after the '70s), but there are still more than a few gems.

Hotter Than Hell, along with their self-titled debut, just sits a notch below the more famed and acclaimed Destroyer. This second offering, released in the same year of their first, is more solid than their first although it lacks the thrilling climactic tracks of their debut. Most of the songs are sung by Gene, who carries and lifts the album with the boisterous "Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll", the enigmatic "Watchin' You", the driving and energetic "Parasite", and with one of Kiss's all-time best songs, "Goin' Blind". There's no doubt that Hotter Than Hell is a Kiss essential album.

Hotter Than Hell is the second studio album by American hard rock band Kiss, released on October 22, 1974 by Casablanca Records. It was certified gold on June 23, 1977, having shipped 500,000 copies. The album was re-released in 1997 in a remastered version. It peaked on the Billboard 200 charts at No. 100, without the benefit of a hit single. Many of the album's songs are live staples for the band, including Parasite", "Hotter Than Hell", "Let Me Go, Rock 'n' Roll" and "Watchin' You".

Kiss learned the real meaning of Hotter Than Hell when they played two shows at a club with broken air conditioning in the middle of a heat wave in August 1988. Before embarking on a big European festival tour in August 1988, Kiss decided to shake off some stage rust with two club shows in their hometown of New York City. Cool idea, except for two problems: The city was in the midst of its fifth-worst heat wave ever, and the venue's air conditioning system broke down.

Impressively released barely three months after their debut, Kiss are back with their second album, ‘Hotter Than Hell’. While I admire a lot of these early rock bands from back in the day for their non-stop work ethic which saw them chug out so many releases in such a short space of time, the end result is usually average at best.
