Le Domaine Musical was a concert society established by Pierre Boulez in Paris, which was active from 1954 to 1973. Boulez intended to provide opportunities for new music, after a general musical migration from Germany and Austria to Paris in the wake of those countries' legacy of war-torn decades without music. Le Domaine Musical created an exciting milieu in which the best and most innovative in music and other arts could congregate: it was a springboard for creativity, stimulating new ideas and alliances. Jean Cocteau attended the first concert, resplendent in flowing cape. Doxy presents a reissue of Les Concerts du Domaine Musical, originally released by the French label Véga in 1956. In 1954 Pierre Boulez began a series of new-music concerts in Paris, presenting them in the Théatre Marigny, where he worked as music director for Jean-Louis Barrault's theatre company. These two fascinating four-disc sets document the history of the Domaine Musical with a mixture of live concert recordings and studio sessions based upon Marigny performances, many of them conducted by Boulez himself.

These historic performances date from a time when a young Stockhausen and Boulez were exploding the ideas of serialism and atonality into a newer and more radically experimental music while regarding Webern as their chief influence. Webern studied serialist/12-tone compositional methods alongside Alban Berg under Arnold Schoenberg and became influential to postwar composers like John Cage, Morton Feldman, Luigi Nono, and Milton Babbitt.
