49 years ago today, David Bowie released a single from his self-titled album, except it wasn’t actually from the album, since it was so long that he ended up splitting the song more or less in half and re-recording it as two separate songs, one for each side of the single. In its original form, Memory of a Free Festival was seven minutes and 11 seconds long, which – unless you’re the Beatles – was simply not an acceptable running time for a single
David Bowie is the second studio album by the English musician David Bowie, released under that title by Philips in the UK, and as Man of Words/Man of Music by Mercury in the US, on 14 November 1969. It was reissued in 1972 by RCA Records as Space Oddity (the title of the opening track, which had reached No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart). Space Oddity was the name used for CD releases of the album in 1984, 1990 and 1999, but it reverted to the original, eponymous title for 2009 and 2015 reissues.
David Bowie immortalized the event in his song "Memory of a Free Festival," a light, trippy tune that waxes nostalgic about rainbows, clouds, and soft green grass.

Memory of a Free Festival- David Bowie. The Children of the summer’s end Gathered in the dampened grass, We played Our songs and felt the London sky Resting on our hands. Re-recording Memory of a Free Festival for single release, Bowie decided to split the epic tune from the Space Oddity album over the A-Side and B-Side. The A-Side led with the first part of the song, now no longer a naked, downbeat Rosedale organ and voice solo, but a full band upbeat glam stomp. It ends with a short coda, taken from the second part of the song.
