The album effortlessly segues from 80s radio-ready pop-rock and chillwave to first-wave shoegaze and motorik. Ray can sound like he's from the Purling Hiss School of Classic-Rock Appropriation in one move, and just as seamlessly turn in a lilting, ambient piece that may or may not be named after a member of the Black Eyed Peas. There's the corrosive synth line that swells to the top of "Design", and there's the tape decay and clanging guitars that interrupt "I'm a Slug". This is the first Speculator full-length pressed onto vinyl, and Nice is definitely a work of two sides.

Nice, the new full-length from Speculator, expresses this nonspecific state of mind in a manner I can only describe as being viscerally loose. It’s paradoxical, but then again, so is the sentimentality with which one often views the not-that-distant past. This uncanny understanding of the subtleties behind surface apathy helps elevate Nice in the lo-fi hierarchy, rendering the album’s aesthetic choices more than just a cheap grab at so-called integrity. Many of Ray’s choices resonate far beyond their overt stylistic callbacks.

Speculator: Nice by alteredzones. Nice was recorded using exactly the same equipment with a much different intent. The record is called "Nice" because I tried to make it a more concise articulation of the kinds of songs that I am interested in writing.
