Big Chill launches compilation album. The Big Chill is releasing a compilation album to mark the 15th anniversary of the music festival. The record will be made up of tracks chosen by headlining acts from previous festivals, including Coldcut, Gilles Peterson, Jon Hopkins, Mr Scruff and Norman Jay. Coldcut's Matt Black revealed that he chose Funki Porchini's 'Long Road' because it reminds him of the event's early days.

Features vocals from Jon Spencer, Mike Ladd, Roots Manuva, Robert Owens, John Matthias, Fog, Saul Williams, Mpho Skeef, Soweto Kinch, Dom Spitzer, Annette Peacock and Amiri Baraka. This album clearly demonstrates where Jonathan More and Matt Black find themselves in their career. And god forbid they should drop a few danceable tracks in there. I'm a DJ, and while I appreciate some complicated auditory textures and layers in an artist's work, I have to say some of the danceable tracks on this album are super-fresh and I WILL be spinning them on the dance floor (and in my opinion, the best albums usually have a healthy balance of cerebral and corporeal tracks). Sound Mirrors is a bit unexpected, but the old Coldcut is still there in many ways.

Besides the syrupy feel of the LP, the abundance of message tracks ("Noah's Toilet," Biafra's "Every Home a Prison," "Cloned Again") subvert the message of the title, indicative of Coldcut's playful qualities over the years. The lone highlight is the single "More Beats + Pieces," a remake of the 1988 original, which was constructed from samples in homage to pioneering hip-hop DJs who manned two turntables with little opportunity to fall back on samplers and expensive keyboards.
