Granular synthesis is a basic sound synthesis method that operates on the microsound time scale. It is based on the same principle as sampling. However, the samples are not played back conventionally, but are instead split into small pieces of around 1 to 50 ms. These small pieces are called grains. Multiple grains may be layered on top of each other, and may play at different speeds, phases, volume, and frequency, among other parameters.

Granular synthesis doesn’t get much attention in music production. In this article, we cover what it is, how you’re already using it, and some granular sound design techniques. The term granular synthesis is a rather unspecific one, as it can cover all systems that utilize the concept of granulation. Granulation is a process in which an audio sample is broken down into tiny segments of audio. These segments are called grains.

Granular synthesis is the core technology behind the latest time-stretching and pitch-shifting algorithms, but it can also be used to generate extraordinary evolving soundscapes. We explain how the process works and show you how to get the best from the software that uses it. The majority of software instruments use variations on the synthesis method known as subtractive synthesis. However, as computers have become much faster, digital signal processing techniques that were once the preserve of academic labs and telephone companies are finding a strong foothold in music software. The technique known rather grandly as granular synthesis is an extremely powerful audio manipulation system that makes it possible to adjust the speed, pitch, and formant characteristics of audio samples independently of one another, and all in real time if your computer is fast enough.
